When I lived in the dorms at CSU, the heater was either always too hot, too cold, or just right. They were boiler-fed heaters, you understand, and so if you were closer to the power plant, you would have your windows open in winter, and if you were far away from the power plant, it was shutters. There were rumors of the natural tunnels which would attend the boiler heaters of CSU. I never ventured into them, myself, but I’d heard rumors of peers who had explored their entrances when I was a college student. I suppose it wouldn’t be too hard to follow the network
Then today I found out the YMCA has an undercarriage from the imprint of an old pool, the old and much larger pool is still there, under the floorboards, fascinating. When the old power plant got decommissioned, so ended the natural, cheap, and easy heat source to the pool, and with it the incentive to keep the heat going.
My same source told me that the river “used to be a mile wide” before the dams were built. If that’s true, it follows they could easily be made wide again, maybe not a mile, that seems high, but quite wide enough for safe passage of larger vessel.
Water tends to do what is always does, after all…
And of course it’s like Sim City in that little part of the world - the crossing of railroads, power, a river running through it, sleeping giant pools, a decommissioned fountain resting outside, bygone eras, rumors of tunnels, oh my.
This town used to be an Army base (the airport especially). It’s mothballed now. That means it could come roaring back to life as such. The region is scattered with many more mothballed WW2 inland bases, safe from Russia, or maybe it was in cooperation with at the time (that’s above my pay grade, but I am truly curious), igloo bunkers, nuclear missiles, war manufacturing, endless pot ash, tool-and-die metal, lead. Just waiting for someone to make the call to rouse the mechanized production troops…
